Lean Body Mass

What it is

Lean body mass is your total weight minus fat mass: muscle, bone, organs, water, everything else. It's a useful number for tracking body composition changes over time, especially alongside a body fat percentage reading.

-- kg lean body mass

When to use this

Use this alongside a body fat percentage reading to see the fuller picture of what your weight is made of, especially useful when tracking a body recomposition where the scale isn't moving much but your proportions are changing. It's also a more individualized reference point than generic height-weight charts.

How it's calculated

The Boer formula is: for men, (0.407 x weight in kg) + (0.267 x height in cm) - 19.2. For women, (0.252 x weight in kg) + (0.473 x height in cm) - 48.3. It's one of several lean body mass formulas and tends to perform well across a wide range of body types.
