Army Body Fat Standard

What it is

The U.S. military uses a tape-measure method almost identical to the standard Navy circumference formula, then checks the result against maximum allowable body fat percentages that vary by age and sex. This calculator runs both steps at once.

-- % body fat --

Compared against commonly published maximum allowable body fat for your age group.

When to use this

Use this ahead of an official body composition assessment to get a sense of where you stand before it counts, or periodically during a training cycle if you're working toward a specific standard. Because tape measurements are sensitive to technique, take them a few times and average the results rather than relying on a single reading.

How it's calculated

The measurement formula is the same circumference-based equation used in the standard body fat calculator. This tool additionally compares your result against commonly published maximum body fat allowances, which increase slightly with age: roughly 20-26% for men and 30-36% for women depending on age bracket. Actual service-specific regulations can vary and change, so treat the pass/fail line as indicative rather than official.
